Funchal on a cruise: your day in 4, 6 or 8 hours
Many guides promise the city 15 minutes from the ship, but from the cruise terminal to the market it is 2.6 km. Here are real plans for 4, 6 and 8 hours, counted back from your all-aboard time.
In short. You can do a lot in Funchal without a shore excursion. From the dock it is about 2.6 km on foot to the Mercado dos Lavradores, 35 minutes, and 2.8 km to the cable car. With 4 hours, walk the centre; with 6, ride up to Monte (€16 one way) and come down by toboggan (€30 for one, €40 for two); with 8, add Câmara de Lobos by bus. Always count back from your all-aboard time, never from the ship’s departure.

The rule of the day: count back from all-aboard time
In 2025, Funchal had 331 cruise calls with 746,257 passengers, and the port authority expects to end 2026 with 349 calls and about 820,000. On 7 October 2026 around 10,000 people came into port in a single day. Nearly all of them want the same thing: leave the ship, go up to Monte and get back in time. The people who win the day are the ones who do the sums backwards.
The time that matters is all-aboard, printed in the ship’s daily programme. Departure time is no use: by then everyone has to be on board already. Work it out like this:
- Write down your all-aboard time. Many calls end between 4pm and 6pm, but every ship has its own.
- Take off an hour of margin, for a queue at the gate, a late bus or a Bolt that never comes.
- Count the time between leaving the ship and that limit. If you leave at 9am and all-aboard is 4pm, you have 6 hours.
- Pick the plan with that number. The plans below already include getting to and from the ship.

From the ship to the city: real walking distances
Many guides say 15 minutes to the centre. Measured along the streets from the cruise terminal at Pontinha, the centre is more than 2 km away, and the berth your ship is given can add a few minutes. The walk is flat: leave through the port gate and follow the seafront east. If your ship runs a shuttle, the crew will tell you where it stops.
| Route | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise terminal to Funchal Cathedral | 2.1 km | 30 minutes |
| Cruise terminal to Mercado dos Lavradores | 2.6 km | 35 minutes |
| Cruise terminal to the cable car, in the Old Town | 2.8 km | 40 minutes |
| Cathedral to Mercado dos Lavradores | 0.6 km | 8 minutes |
| Market to Rua de Santa Maria | 0.5 km | 6 minutes |
| Rua de Santa Maria to the cable car | 0.2 km | 2 minutes |
- Bus. There are three stops on the seafront: Cais, Marina and Praça da Autonomia. Within Funchal a ticket costs €2.05 on board, cash only, and Câmara de Lobos is another municipality, at €2.65. The rest is in our guide to Madeira without a car.
- Bolt. A short ride in Funchal costs around €4 to €8 (indicative, September 2026). It is the best way back in a hurry, but ride-hailing licences are suspended and cars are limited, so on busy ship days order one early.
Want to go without driving?

With 4 hours: the centre on foot
Four hours is enough for the city at an easy pace, and the walk there and back already takes 1 h 10. Do it in this order, west to east:
- Follow the seafront to the Cathedral: 2.1 km, 30 minutes. See the Sé and Praça do Município, 300 metres away.
- Walk 8 minutes to the Mercado dos Lavradores. Allow 40 minutes for the fruit, the flowers and the fish hall.
- Enter the Old Town along Rua de Santa Maria, 6 minutes away, and have lunch there.
- Walk back along the seafront in 40 minutes, or take a Bolt if time is tight.
All told that is about 3 h 30, with half an hour spare. Monte is a squeeze: 1 h 20 of walking to and from the cable car, plus the ride and the queue. It only makes sense with a Bolt both ways, on a day with few ships in port.
With 6 hours: Monte, the garden and the toboggan
This is the classic cruise day, and it has one weak spot: the cable car carries 800 people an hour. If a third of a 3,000-passenger ship heads for the station at once, that is 1,000 people, more than it can move in an hour. So start here, and early.
- Go straight to the cable car: 2.8 km on foot, 40 minutes, or a Bolt. It opens at 8:45. Buy your ticket online first, €16 one way, so you can go straight to boarding. The ride takes 15 to 18 minutes.
- Visit the Monte Palace garden (€18), a few steps from the top station, and allow 1 h 30. Stop at Monte church, where Emperor Charles I of Austria is buried.
- Come down by wicker toboggan: €30 for one, €40 for two, €60 for three. It runs 2 km to Livramento.
- Livramento is still about 2 km from the centre. Bus 019 runs down to the Marina stop on the seafront for €2.05 on board, and the 020 and 021 also return to the centre. On foot, downhill, allow 25 to 30 minutes.
- Have lunch in the Old Town or near the market and walk back along the seafront.

| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Cable car, one way | €16 |
| Monte Palace | €18 |
| Toboggan | €20 |
| Bus from Livramento | €2.05 |
| Total | €56.05 |
If the queue is long, reverse it: go up on the 020 or 021, which leave from the seafront by Praça da Autonomia, with several departures an hour on weekdays and fewer on Sundays, for €2.05. Then ride the cable car down, with the view in front of you. You miss the toboggan, but you skip the queue to go up.
With 8 hours: add Câmara de Lobos
With 8 hours, do Monte in the morning and use the afternoon to leave the city. Choose Câmara de Lobos, with its fishing harbour, the spot where Churchill painted in 1950 and the poncha bars. Bus 202 makes the trip for €2.65 on board, in about 30 minutes. Check the SIGA timetable, decide your bus back before you leave the stop, and take one earlier than you need.
Cabo Girão is 12.8 km away, 17 minutes by car, and a ticket costs €5. The bus does not suit a port day: the 340 only passes at 09:50, and the last bus back leaves early. Take a Bolt and arrange the return before you get out, because a pick-up up there is not guaranteed.
The alternative is Curral das Freiras, 17.8 km away, 27 minutes by car. Bus 181 stops at Marina and has 18 departures on weekdays, but it takes up the whole afternoon, so leave Câmara de Lobos out.
What does not fit in a port day
- Porto Moniz. It is 3 h 30 by bus there and 2 h 15 back. By car it is about an hour, and the pools depend on the sea, so the risk is not worth it.
- Pico do Areeiro. The afternoon bus goes up at 13:30 and only comes down at 18:00. Without a car, Pico do Areeiro is out.
- Fanal. There is no bus, and by car it is over an hour each way through the mountains.
Sunday, public holiday or rain: what changes
- Sunday. The Mercado dos Lavradores is closed and the toboggans do not run. Stick to the cable car, Monte Palace and the Old Town.
- Public holiday. The market closes too, according to Funchal council, and buses run on a different timetable, usually with fewer departures. The regional holiday on 1 July counts as well, and so does Funchal’s municipal holiday on 21 August.
- Saturday. The market closes at 14:00, so go in the morning.
- Christmas. The cable car closes on 25 December.
- Rain or cloud. If Monte is inside the cloud, do not pay for the cabin for the view: stay downtown. The tourist office on Avenida Arriaga opens 9am to 7pm on weekdays and 9am to 3.30pm on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Frequently asked questions
- How long is the walk from the cruise ship to Funchal centre?
- From the cruise terminal it is about 2.1 km to the Cathedral, 30 minutes, and 2.6 km to the Mercado dos Lavradores, 35 minutes. The walk is flat, along the seafront, and your berth can add a few minutes.
- What can you do in Funchal in 4 hours?
- Walk the centre: the Cathedral, Praça do Município, the Mercado dos Lavradores and the Old Town, with lunch on Rua de Santa Maria. The walk to and from the ship already takes 1 h 10, so save Monte for a longer call.
- Can you visit Monte on a cruise stop?
- Yes, with 6 hours or more. The cable car costs €16 one way and €22 return, opens at 8:45 and takes 15 to 18 minutes. Go first thing, because it carries 800 people an hour and the queue grows on big-ship days.
- Is there a bus from Funchal port to the centre?
- Yes, on the seafront, at the Cais, Marina and Praça da Autonomia stops. A ticket costs €2.05 on board, cash only. For Monte, take the 020 or 021 from the seafront by Praça da Autonomia.
- When should I be back at the ship in Funchal?
- Count from the all-aboard time in the ship’s programme, not from departure time. Keep at least an hour of margin and settle your way back before you leave the centre.
- Do the Monte toboggans run on Sundays?
- No. On other days they cost €30 for one, €40 for two and €60 for three. They finish in Livramento, about 2 km from the centre, where bus 019 runs down to the seafront.
- Can you get to Cabo Girão on a cruise stop?
- Yes, by Bolt or taxi: it is 12.8 km, about 17 minutes, and a ticket costs €5. Arrange the return before you get out, because the bus times do not suit a port day.
