Sunrise at Pico do Areeiro, with a sea of clouds and a trail in the foreground

Pico do Arieiro at sunrise: the bus most guides miss

A public bus reaches the summit at 06:45, before sunrise, and plenty of guides still say you need a car or a tour. Here is the full plan: booking, times, parking, the cold and what to do when the peak is in cloud.

I want to go tomorrow

In short. Pico do Arieiro, officially spelled Pico do Areeiro, stands at 1,818 m and its viewpoint is free, with no booking. To see the sunrise without a car, take the Horários do Funchal bus at 06:00 from the Teleférico stop: it arrives at 06:45, costs €3 and is booked by phone on +351 291 705 555. It comes back at 12:15. By car it is about 20 km and 35 minutes, and the summit car park costs €4 an hour, with 30 minutes free and a €20 daily cap.

How to see the Pico do Arieiro sunrise by bus

At 06:00, with Funchal still dark, a 31-seat public bus leaves the stop beside the cable car and climbs to 1,818 metres. It arrives at 06:45 and the ticket costs €3. The service has run since August 2024, and plenty of guides still tell you that without a car the Pico do Arieiro sunrise means a paid tour.

A word on the name: the official spelling is Pico do Areeiro, but almost everyone searches for Pico do Arieiro. It is the same place, and in the text we use the official form.

On the summer timetable, from 28 March to 30 October 2027, the last bus down leaves at 19:00. It runs every day except 25 December, and Horários do Funchal can cancel it if the weather or the road rules it out.

  1. Ring +351 291 705 555 between seven and two working days before you travel: Monday to Thursday, 08:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00; Friday until 17:00. There is no online booking.
  2. Ask for a seat both ways. Seats can only be reserved at the departure stops, Teleférico and Pico do Areeiro.
  3. Be at the stop by 05:45, 15 minutes early. Arrive later and your seat is no longer guaranteed.
  4. Pay on board, in cash or by card. Children up to 5 travel free, and passes and GIRO cards are not valid here.

Two traps. To travel on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, the last day you can ring is the Thursday before. And the bus takes 31 seated passengers with nobody standing: turn up without a seat on a clear morning and you may be left on the pavement. What time is sunrise at Pico do Arieiro

The bus always beats the sun, but the margin changes a lot through the year. In winter you wait over an hour in the cold. In June you get 15 minutes and the sky is already bright: you see the sun come up but miss the colours before it.

First light comes about 25 minutes before the sun, and that is when the sky turns. Look at April: once the clocks go forward, sunrise is later again than in March. At this altitude the disc appears a few minutes before the time in the table.

Pick your spot by the season. In March and September the sun rises straight out from Ponta de São Lourenço. In December it comes up further right, over the sea. In June it rises further left, towards Porto Santo, which you can see on clear days.

Driving to Pico do Arieiro and where to park

From central Funchal it is about 20 km and 35 minutes: up the ER103 through Monte, Terreiro da Luta and Poiso, then along the ER202 to the top. In the dark, allow the 45 minutes the bus takes.

The trouble is the last stretch. One morning in April 2025 the Diário de Notícias reported cars on both verges, even on bends, coaches stuck and the lower car park almost full by 07:00. On a clear morning, above all at weekends, arrive an hour before the sun.

Summit, by the bar and shop€430 minutes€20
Overflow, further down€230 minutes€5

In 2027 the hourly rates rise to €4.25 and €2.25. If the summit car park is full, do not leave the car on the verge: use the overflow car park and take the Horários do Funchal shuttle, €1.20 a trip, paid on board. It runs every 15 minutes from 06:40 to 12:15 and from 14:10 to 18:00, and only sets off with at least four passengers.

How to check the weather: Pico do Arieiro webcam and forecast

The Funchal forecast is no use: the summit sits 1,800 metres above the city and often above the clouds. It can rain on the seafront with sun at the top, and the reverse happens too. Check these four things.

  • Summit webcam. The Pico do Arieiro webcam on the Netmadeira portal shows the top live. At 05:00 it is only darkness, so open the Timelapses tab: it keeps one image every 30 minutes for the last 24 hours and shows what the sky did at 07:00 and 08:00 the day before.
  • Nearby webcams. Achada do Teixeira helps you read the north side of the mountains; Monte shows low cloud over Funchal.
  • Official warnings. The evening before, check the IPMA warnings for Madeira. With a warning for snow, strong wind or rain on high ground, stay in bed.
  • Roads. Snow or ice closes the road. On 3 March 2026 the ER202 shut between Poiso and Pico do Areeiro. The list of closed roads is published on the Visit Madeira website.

What to do if the peak is in fog

By car you can decide at the top. By bus you have to decide the evening before.

  • By car. Wait half an hour past sunrise, because the cloud may lift. If nothing changes, drive down to Ribeiro Frio, 11 km and about 15 minutes away, where the Vereda dos Balcões starts (€4.50 on SIMplifica).
  • By bus. There is no way down before 12:15. If the forecast looks bad the evening before, do not go: the ticket is only paid on board, so the booking costs you nothing. Ring to release your seat.
  • Already at the top. There is a bar and a shop by the upper car park, but do not count on them at 06:45: bring food and a hot drink.
  • If the sky clears late. The morning can still pay off: buy the €4.50 ticket on SIMplifica to Pedra Rija viewpoint, 1.2 km each way.

How cold it gets and what to bring

Sunrise is the coldest hour of the day, and at 1,818 metres the wind matters more than the thermometer. On 3 March 2026 it was still minus 1.2 °C at the summit at noon. Even in August, anyone who goes up in a T-shirt soon regrets it.

  • A warm windproof jacket, in any month.
  • Hat and gloves from October to April.
  • A torch or a charged phone: at night the walk from the lower car park is dark.
  • Closed shoes with good grip, because fog leaves the rock wet.

Stay on the inside of the railings and fences. At night you cannot see the edge.

A plan for the morning, with or without a car

  • Without a car. At the Teleférico stop by 05:45, at the summit by 06:45. Watch the sun, then use the morning for the walk to Pedra Rija and back, with your ticket bought in advance. The bus leaves at 12:15 and reaches Funchal at 13:00. If you do not want to walk, five and a half hours up there is a lot: come by car instead.
  • With a car. Add 45 minutes of road to the time you want to arrive. To be there an hour before the sun in November, leave Funchal at about 05:50. Afterwards, drive down to Ribeiro Frio or carry on to Santana and the east coast, about 36 minutes away.
  • On foot to Pico Ruivo. That hike has its own guide: see PR1 from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. Since June 2026 there are entry slots from 07:00, aimed at people coming from the sunrise. Check the times for your date on SIMplifica.
  • How long you need. One hour covers the view. With the walk to Pedra Rija and back, allow two and a half hours.
