Winter schedule, checked 2 November 2026. Airlines change routes from season to season: always check the flight before you book.

No direct flight from your airport? Go via Lisbon or Porto

Lisbon has 81 flights a week to Funchal with TAP, easyJet and Ryanair, from 06:45 to 23:10. Porto has 46. With one flight to Lisbon you reach Madeira the same day from almost anywhere in Europe.

  • One ticket: the connection is the airline’s problem. If the first flight is late and you miss the second, they rebook you, and EU compensation covers the whole journey.
  • Separate tickets: the connection is yours. Ryanair and easyJet state in their terms that they do not connect flights, so a missed second flight means a new ticket. Allow 3 hours in Lisbon, more with checked bags or if you arrive from outside Schengen, as everyone from the UK and Ireland does.
  • In Lisbon all arrivals use Terminal 1, where TAP and easyJet depart. Ryanair leaves from Terminal 2, a 3-minute free shuttle ride that runs every 12 minutes.
  • Stop in Lisbon at no extra fare. TAP’s Stopover lets you spend 1 to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto, outbound or inbound. If your route qualifies, TAP’s booking page shows the option.

The full picture, including what fits into a 4 to 12-hour layover, is on Lisbon to Madeira.

What it costs to fly to Madeira, month by month

The fares on each card are the cheapest found in real searches over recent days, one way and in euros. A month only shows when it has at least 5 days with a fare; otherwise we check the price when you ask, rather than guess it.

We repeat the collection every week and keep each one. Lisbon and Porto already have fares for most months; for many cities in the UK, Germany and northern Europe the sample is still short.

Arriving in Funchal

Madeira Airport is in Santa Cruz, 18 km from the centre of Funchal, with the runway between the sea and the hillside. The Aerobus, route 500, runs into town between 08:30 and 22:00, €6.70 on board; the route, fares and taxis are in our guide to Madeira without a car.

Madeira keeps the same time as London and Lisbon all year. Central Europe is an hour ahead and the Azores an hour behind.

Strong wind diverts or cancels flights in any season: the north wind in summer, storms in winter. What happens and what to do is on Madeira Airport wind. And there is no passenger ferry from mainland Portugal; the story and what does run is on Is there a ferry to Madeira?.

More on getting to Madeira

The questions people ask most before booking the flight.

Questions before you book

Which airlines fly to Funchal?

This winter 24 airlines fly to Funchal from 57 European cities. TAP, easyJet and Ryanair link Lisbon and Porto several times a day. From the rest of Europe you will find, among others, British Airways, Jet2, Condor, Discover, TUI fly, Eurowings, Transavia, Wizz Air, Edelweiss, Luxair, SAS, Norwegian, Finnair and airBaltic.

How long is the flight from London to Madeira?

3h 55m to 4h 10m on the schedule, from Gatwick, Luton or Stansted. From Manchester it is 4h 05m and from Dublin 3h 45m.

Can I fly direct to Madeira from Heathrow?

Not this winter. London’s direct flights leave from Gatwick, Luton and Stansted.

Is Lisbon in Madeira?

No. Lisbon is Portugal’s capital, on the mainland. Madeira is an island in the Atlantic almost 1,000 km away, 1h 55m by plane, and there is no ferry or train between them.

Is Madeira part of the Canary Islands or the Azores?

Neither. Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal with two inhabited islands, Madeira and Porto Santo. The Azores are another Portuguese archipelago and the Canaries belong to Spain. Funchal has direct flights to both: 2h 05m to Ponta Delgada and 1h 40m to Tenerife North.

What time is it in Madeira?

The same as in London and Lisbon, all year round. Central Europe is an hour ahead; the Azores an hour behind.
