One ticket or separate tickets

  • One ticket: the connection is the airline’s. If the first flight is late, you go on the next one, and EU compensation covers the whole journey.
  • Separate tickets: the connection is yours. Ryanair and easyJet do not connect flights (it is in their terms), and the European Commission says there is no compensation for missing a flight bought separately.
  • Allow 3 hours between flights on separate tickets, and more with checked bags: you collect them and check them in again.
  • From the UK and Ireland you go through passport control in Lisbon, where since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System records the face and fingerprints of non-EU travellers, British passport holders included. Leave more time.

Spending a few days in Lisbon on the way to Madeira

TAP’s Stopover lets you stay 1 to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto at no extra fare, outbound or inbound. During the stop it also gives 25% off a TAP domestic flight, such as Lisbon or Porto to Funchal. If your route qualifies, TAP’s booking page shows it.

Lisbon and Madeira in one trip, two or three nights in Lisbon and the rest on the island, is the twin-centre holiday that operators sell in the UK, Germany, France and Spain. We put the same trip together with the flight between the two cities included: see our trips or ask on WhatsApp.
