Funchal’s New Year fireworks
The display starts at midnight on 31 December and lasts about 8 minutes. There are 58 firing points: 26 on Funchal’s amphitheatre, 25 between Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis, 5 at sea and 2 on the island of Porto Santo. In 2006 Guinness World Records recognised it as the largest fireworks display in the world.
For the start of 2026 it took 22 tonnes of material and 97,000 shots, after a show of lasers, lights and drones, on a night of bad weather. In port there were 11 cruise ships and a sailing ship, carrying about 22,000 passengers.
Where to watch the fireworks
The fireworks go up all round the bay, so you can see them from almost anywhere in Funchal. The choice is between being close to the firing points or seeing the whole picture.
- On the seafront: Avenida do Mar runs past the 25 coastal firing points, between Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis. It is where the biggest crowd gathers, so get there early.
- High on the amphitheatre: from the viewpoints, squares and gardens up the hillside you see the whole bay, with the city’s fireworks all around you.
- From a ship: the New Year cruise ships stay in the bay during the display.
- From your balcony: a room facing the bay gives you the fireworks without the crowd.
The centre fills up that night: leave the car and walk.

Christmas and New Year: the programme
The 2026/27 Christmas and New Year programme runs from 1 December to 10 January, with the whole of Funchal’s amphitheatre lit up and Christmas displays in the Baixa. The Christmas Village is open from 4 December to 6 January, the Christmas workshops from 2 December to 8 January, and the Cantar dos Reis, the Epiphany singing, is on 5 January in the Municipal Garden.

The official calendar warns that the programme may change: check the dates closer to your trip.
The weather at the end of December
Mild, but it is the wettest month. In Funchal, December averages a 21 °C high and a 15.5 °C low, with 94.8 mm of rain over 8.6 days (IPMA, 1991 to 2020). The sea is around 20 °C. Up in the mountains it is 10 to 12 °C colder than in town.
Wind matters too. On 12 December 2025, storm Emília cancelled more than 70 flights at Madeira Airport. Arrive two or three days before the 31st and avoid tight connections on the way home; what to do if your flight diverts is on Madeira Airport wind.
Flight and hotel: what they cost and when to book
Flights jump in price this week. In searches between 26 October and 2 November 2026, a return from Lisbon leaving between 24 and 31 December cost €141 to €479, against €40 to €46 for the cheapest flights in early December. Direct flights from every city, including 15 airports in the UK and Ireland, are on Flights to Madeira.
Last New Year, hotel occupancy was close to 100%. Funchal’s tourist tax is €2 per person per night, up to 7 nights; the council has proposed €4 from 1 January 2027, not yet finally approved, which could make the nights after New Year’s Eve dearer.
On the holidays themselves
- 25 December: there is no Aerobus and no regular bus service. If you land that day, plan on a taxi, Bolt or Uber.
- Porto Santo: in December 2026 the Lobo Marinho ferry does not sail on the 22nd, 25th and 29th; on the 24th it returns from Porto Santo at 12:00 and on the 31st at 11:30.
