Lisbon from Friday to Monday
Three nights are enough for Lisbon, as long as Belém isn’t left for Monday. The Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower both close on Mondays, so keep them for Saturday or Sunday; the castle and the Oceanário open every day, and the old neighbourhoods never close.
Some of what older guides say no longer holds. The airport’s Aerobus stopped running a few years ago; the Santa Justa lift has been shut since September 2025, along with the Glória and Bica funiculars; and the Tile Museum closed for works in November 2025. From the airport, the metro does the job: about 20 minutes to Saldanha for €1.90.
What to do from Friday to Monday
- Friday evening
- Drop your bags and head down to Cais do Sodré, where the Time Out Market stays open until midnight, or up to the Bairro Alto for a first drink in its narrow streets.
- Saturday
- Belém in the morning: the Jerónimos Monastery (€18) and the Belém Tower (€15), and the MAAT on the way back along the river. Back in town, the Alfama in the late afternoon, climbing street by street to one of the viewpoints.
- Sunday
- The Castelo de São Jorge (€17, open every day) and the Graça viewpoint, then tram 28 if the queue allows: €3.30, paid on board. In the afternoon, the Oceanário at Parque das Nações, also open daily.
- Monday morning
- The Baixa and Chiado on foot, a pastel de nata, and the red line back to the airport.
Where to stay
- Baixa and Chiado
- The flat Baixa and, just uphill, the Chiado: central and walkable, with metro stations on the doorstep. Busy by day, calmer at night.
- Alfama
- The oldest quarter, below the castle: steep lanes, fado houses and small hotels. Lovely to come back to, hard work with a suitcase.
- Avenida da Liberdade
- The broad avenue of bigger hotels and shops, a short walk from Restauradores. Quieter in the evening.
- Príncipe Real
- Gardens, independent shops and restaurants, a few minutes from the Bairro Alto.
From the airport to the centre
- Metro, red line
- From Aeroporto station to Saldanha in about 20 minutes; for Baixa-Chiado, change at Alameda (green line) or São Sebastião (blue line). A single ticket is €1.90 and covers the change; the Navegante card you load it onto costs €0.50. Trains run from 6.30am to 1am.
- Uber and Bolt
- Ride-hailing cars pick up at car park P2, level 2, on the arrivals side.
- Aerobus
- No longer running. Guides that still list it are out of date.
Questions

What is the cheapest month to go to Lisbon?
From Dublin, January (€184). These are prices for the middle week of each month; on a given date they can be higher or lower, and the search shows them day by day.
How long is the flight to Lisbon?
From Dublin, 2 h 50, flying direct.
Is the Aerobus still running at Lisbon airport?
No. The airport shuttle stopped running in 2022 or 2023 and hasn’t come back. The red metro line, from the station at the airport, is the easiest way into town: €1.90 for a single ticket, plus €0.50 for the card.
Is the Lisboa Card worth it for a weekend?
It costs €31 for 24 hours, €51 for 48 hours and €62 for 72 hours, with unlimited metro, buses and trams and free entry to the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the castle. Those three cost €50 between them, so on a day with all three and a couple of tram rides, the 24-hour card pays for itself.
How many good hotels are there in central Lisbon?
Up to 39 four- and five-star hotels within 3 km of the centre, rated 8 or more, had rooms free in the weeks we checked, for 2 people from Friday to Monday.
