Porto from Friday to Monday

Porto is a city on two riverbanks. The old town climbs from the Ribeira on one side of the Douro, the port wine lodges line the other in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the top deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, which you can walk across for free beside the metro, links the two.

Book one thing before you fly: Livraria Lello only lets you in with a ticket bought online, at €15.95, which comes off the price of a book from its own editions. A cellar visit can wait until you’re there; at Sandeman, the standard visit with three ports is €23.

What to do from Friday to Monday

Friday evening
From the airport, metro line E gets to Trindade in about half an hour. Dinner down at the Ribeira, by the river.
Saturday
Livraria Lello and the Clérigos Tower (€10, open daily) in the morning, the tiled hall of São Bento station on the way down, and lunch at the Ribeira. In the afternoon, walk the top of the bridge to Gaia for a cellar visit.
Sunday
Serralves: the museum and park cost €24 together, or €15 for the park alone. Then the Foz, where the river meets the sea, for a walk along the front.
Monday morning
A last coffee in the Baixa, a look at the city from the Jardim do Morro on the Gaia side of the bridge, and the metro back to the airport, about half an hour from Trindade.

Where to stay

Baixa and Aliados
The centre, around the city hall avenue, with metro stops close by. Everything is within walking distance, downhill to the river.
Ribeira
Right on the river, lively until late. Steep streets, and rooms with a view of Gaia.
Cedofeita and Bombarda
Galleries, cafés and shops, a little away from the crowds and still within walking distance of the centre.
Gaia riverside
Across the bridge, with the port lodges at the door and the best view of Porto itself.

From the airport to the centre

Metro, line E (purple)

Night bus 3M
From 12.30am to 5.30am, the STCP 3M bus links the airport and Avenida dos Aliados every hour, for €2.50 on board.
