Lisbon with three children, Friday to Monday
Lisbon is easier with children than its hills suggest, as long as the metro and the trams do the climbing. Stay somewhere flat, keep Belém for the weekend, when its monuments are open, and give one afternoon to Parque das Nações, where the Oceanário and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento science centre stand side by side on the river.
The hard part is the room. Not every hotel has one that sleeps five, so the prices on this page are for a single room for all five, not a double room multiplied. Once you’re there, two details change the bill: the Oceanário costs less in its late-afternoon slot, and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento sells a €35 family ticket.
What to do from Friday to Monday
- Friday evening
- The red metro line gets from the airport to Saldanha in about 20 minutes, and under-4s ride free. Dinner near the hotel, or at the Time Out Market in Cais do Sodré, open until midnight, where everyone can pick their own stall.
- Saturday
- Belém in the morning, while its monuments are open: the Jerónimos Monastery (€18), the Belém Tower (€15) and the riverside gardens. In the afternoon, the zoo, at €31 per adult and €19 per child from 3 to 12, or in summer the train on to the beach at Carcavelos.
- Sunday
- Parque das Nações: the Pavilhão do Conhecimento first, with its €35 family ticket, then the Oceanário from 4pm, when tickets are cheapest (€25.50 per adult and €15.50 per child aged 3 to 12).
- Monday morning
- The flat Baixa on foot, down to the Praça do Comércio by the river, and the red line back to the airport.
Where to stay
- Baixa
- Flat, central and walkable, with the metro at the door: the easiest base with small children or a buggy.
- Avenida da Liberdade
- The broad avenue of bigger hotels, a short walk from the Baixa. Quieter in the evening.
- Saldanha
- On the red line, about 20 minutes from the airport with no change.
- Alfama
- The oldest quarter, below the castle: steep, cobbled and lovely, but hard going with a buggy.
From the airport to the centre
- Metro, red line
- From Aeroporto station to Saldanha in about 20 minutes. A single costs €1.90, plus €0.50 for the navegante card. Under-4s ride free; from 4 to 12, children travel free only with a personalised navegante card on the child profile, which you apply for in advance.
- Uber and Bolt
- Pick-up at car park P2, level 2, on the arrivals side. By law, children can ride without a child seat in taxis and ride-hailing cars as long as they sit in the back.
- Aerobus
- No longer running. Guides that still list it are out of date.

Is there a family ticket for the Oceanário?
The Oceanário doesn’t list one; what changes the price is the time slot.
