Porto with three children, Friday to Monday

Porto works best for families who split the weekend between the river and the sea. The old town and the port lodges face each other across the Douro, and a few kilometres west the river meets the Atlantic at Foz, with a promenade, beaches and the SEA LIFE aquarium.

Some of the best of it is cheap with children. Serralves, the park and museum on the way to the sea, lets under-12s in free, so two park tickets at €15 cover all five. The cable car in Gaia has a family ticket, and SEA LIFE costs €19 per adult and €14 per child aged 2 to 14 online: €80 for the five of you.

What to do from Friday to Monday

Friday evening
Metro line E from the airport to Trindade in about 30 minutes. Dinner down at the Ribeira, by the river.
Saturday
The top deck of the Dom Luís I bridge on foot to Gaia. Then the Gaia cable car along the riverside: €7 one way per adult and €3.50 per child from 5 to 12, or €22.50 return for two adults and two children. In the afternoon, a port lodge for the grown-ups.
Sunday
Serralves in the morning (free for under-12s, €15 per adult for the park), then on to Foz: the SEA LIFE aquarium and the seafront, or the beach at Matosinhos in summer.
Monday morning
A last walk through the Baixa, the tiled hall of São Bento station, and the metro back to the airport.

Where to stay

Baixa and Aliados
The centre, with metro stops close by and line E straight to the airport from Trindade.
Boavista
Flatter and quieter, halfway between the centre and the sea, with the Casa da Música and Serralves nearby.
Ribeira
Right on the river, but steep and cobbled: lovely for dinner, hard going with a buggy.

From the airport to the centre

Metro, line E (purple)
From the airport to Trindade in about 30 minutes: a Z4 ticket at €2.30, plus €0.60 for the Andante Azul card. The first train leaves the airport at 6.06am and the last at 12.42am.
Night bus 3M
From 12.30am to 5.30am, the STCP 3M bus links the airport and Avenida dos Aliados every hour, for €2.50 on board.
Taxi, Uber or Bolt
By law, children can ride without a child seat in taxis and ride-hailing cars as long as they sit in the back.

One way, €7 per adult and €3.50 per child from 5 to 12; a return is €10 per adult. The family ticket, a return for two adults and two children, costs €22.50.

Do children need a car seat in Portugal?

In a hire car, yes: every child under 12 who is shorter than 1.35 m needs an approved seat that fits their size and weight, in the back. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are exempt, as long as the children don’t sit in the front.
